Polar vs Non-Polar
Terms in this set (16)
Non-polar molecules have?
Non- polar molecules just have positive or negative sides
-0- or +0+
Do Non-polar molecules tend to be symmetrical or asymmetrical?
Is oxygen polar or non-polar?
Is nitrogen polar or non-polar?
Is carbon dioxide (CO2) polar or non-polar?
Is fat polar or non-polar?
Polar molecules have?
Polar molecules have both positive and negative sides (dipole) +0- or -0+
Polar molecules tend to be symmetrical or asymmetrical?
Is water polar or non-polar?
Are all bend molecules polar or non-polar?
Are non-polar molecules hydrophilic or hydrophobic?
Hydrophobic / Non-polar molecules do not dissolve in water as they cannot form hydrogen bonds (thus are hydrophobic) but do dissolve in lipids or fats (lipophilic).
Are polar molecules hydrophilic or hydrophobic?
Hydrophilic / When polar molecules mix with water, the negative dipole of one molecule and the positive dipole of another will be weakly attracted to one another. This weak attraction is called a hydrogen bond and the formation of this bond allows for polar molecules to dissolve in one another. Since water is a polar molecule, other polar molecules will dissolve in water (thus polar molecules are usually hydrophilic and are lipophobic).
Do polar molecules have electrical poles?
Yes / A polar molecule has electrical poles
Do non-polar molecules have electrical poles?
No / A non-polar molecule does not have electrical poles. The electrons are distributed more equally.
Compounds with ionic bonds are soluble in water and have: low or high melting points?
high melting points
Compounds with polar covalent bonds are also soluble in water and have: low or high melting points?
low melting points
