Terms in this set (20)
A stream that flows to a larger stream or other body of water.
Tributary
A small channel or gulley, such as one formed during soil erosion. Usually caused by water.
Rill
Freshwater stored under Earth's surface in soil and rock layers.
Groundwater
The draining away of water from the surface of an area of land, a building or structure, etc. (flows downhill)
Runoff
A small channel or gulley, such as one formed during soil erosion. Usually caused by water.
Rill
The movement of rock particles by wind, water, gravity, ice and etc.
Erosion
Weathering of rocks by smaller rock particles using wind or water power.
Abrasion
When water freezes, it expands and so the cracks in the rock get deeper and wider or breaks.
Ice Wedging
The breaking down of rock into smaller pieces by the action of wind, rain, and temperature change. The particles are made of the same material as the original rock.
Mechanical Weathering
Rock is weathered by chemical changes such as acid rain, oxygen, carbon dioxide, organisms, and etc. The product has a different mineral makeup.
Chemical Weathering
Allows pockets/spaces of air where water or gas can seep through.
Permeable
The movement of surface material caused by gravity. (Landslides and rockfalls) Water, wind and ice all work with gravity to cause a leveling of land.
Mass Movement
Solid material, moved by wind and water, that settles on the surface of land or the bottom of a body of water
Sediment
To lay down sediments to a landform.
Deposition
Succession in a place where no ecosystem existed. No soil, bare rock.
