Cell Organelle Functions

STUDY
PLAY
Nucleus
Control center of the cell
Contains DNA which has information for making protein

"Brain" of the cell
Cell Wall
supports and protects the cell
Found only plant cells
Cell Membrane
thin, flexible barrier around a cell; controls what enters and leaves the cell
"Gatekeeper"
Cytoplasm
a jellylike fluid inside the cell in which the organelles are suspended
Nucleolus
Produces ribosomes (which produce protein)
"Meatballs" found in the nucleus
Chromosomes
Found in the nucleus. Made of DNA. Contains ALL genetic information. Passes cell traits to new cells.

"Spaghetti" in the nuclues
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Network of cananls used to transport and store substances. It is a pathway between the nucleus and cell membrane

ER (emergency room- ambulance transports you to the ER)
Ribosomes
Produces proteins
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell. Provides energy for cellular respiration.
"Mighty Mighty Chondria"
Lysosome
breaks down food molecules and dead or injured cells

"Lysol Cleaner"
Chloroplast
Captures sunlight for photosynthesis

Only found in plant cells
Nuclear Membrane
Regulates passage of materials in and out of the nucleus.
Golgi Body
Produces lysosomes, packages proteins for the cell and releases them into the cytoplasm

"Packaging Plant" like the post office
Vacuole
Stores water and other materials.

Vaccuum up the dirt. Vaccuum holds/stores the dirt in a bag
Organelles
tiny cell structures that carry out specific functions within the cell
Eukaryote
cell with no nuclues or membrane bound cell organelles.
Example: bacteria
Prokaryote
cell with nuclues and organized cell organelles
