Descendants of Levi, one of the twelve sons of Jacob (Gen. 29:34), after whom the book of Leviticus was named. Aaron and his family were chosen from this tribe to serve as priests and to offer the sacrifices, while God appointed the rest of the Levites to the service of the tabernacle, to assist the priests in the worship at the sanctuary (Num. 3:5-10). Portions of the book of Leviticus served as an instruction manual for the Old Testament priesthood.
Translation of the Old Testament into Greek that dates to about 300-200 BC and comes from the Egyptian city of Alexandria. Its name and abbreviation (LXX) come from the fact that a team of seventy-two scholars did the translation work. The Septuagint provides an important early testimony to the Old Testament text.

Class of case law, in contrast to apodictic law or absolute prohibitions. Such laws begin with a conditional clause (protasis, "if . . .") in which the case is described, followed by the penalty (apodosis, "then . . ."). For example, "If a thief is caught breaking in and is struck so that he dies, [then] the defender is not guilty of bloodshed" (Exod. 22:2).
Result of divinely appointed sacrifices intended to free the sinner from the punishment of sin.
Biblical terms describing the removal of sin or defilement. The Hebrew kipper means literally "to cover over," which usually denotes "to atone by offering a substitute." Whether the term refers to an atoning action directed toward God (propitiation) or toward the offense (expiation), it illustrates the Bible's theology of reconciliation.
