EXAM 70-687 Configuring Windows 8 - Lesson 18
LESSON 18 - KEY TERMS
Terms in this set (16)
a feature in Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 that enables networks with computers at remote locations to conserve bandwidth by storing frequently accessed Files on local drives.
a feature in Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 that enables remote users to automatically connect to the company network whenever they have Internet access.
distributed cache mode
Each Windows workstation on the branch office network caches data from the content server on its local drive and shares that cached data with other local workstations.
Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP)
a shell protocol that provides a framework for the use of various types of authentication mechanisms. enables a computer to use mechanisms other than passwords for authentication, including public key certificates and smart cards, as well as providing an extensible environment for third-party authentication mechanisms.
hosted cache mode
Windows workstations on the b ranch office network cache data from the content server on a branch office server, enabling other workstations to access the cached data from there.
Internet Key Exchange, Version 2 (IKEv2)
uses TCP port 500 and provides support for IPv6 and the new VPN Reconnect feature, as well as authentication by EAP, using PEAP, EAP-MSCHAPv2 or smart cards. Used by Windows 8 computers when attempting to connect to remote access servers
layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (l2TP)
Relies on the IP security extensions (IPSec) for encryption
Microsoft Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol
Authentication mechanism used in Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) providing secure data protection for VPN connections
Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)
a client/server connection during which. the server authenticates the client and the computers negotiate a set of communication parameters they have in common.
Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)
The oldest and least secure of the VPN protocols, takes advantage of the authentication, compression, and encryption mechanisms of PPP, tunneling the PPP frame within a Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) header and encrypting it with Microsoft Point-to-Point Encryption (MPPE), using encryption keys generated during the authentication process.
Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol (PEAP)
An authentication protocol that uses a password function based on MS-CHAPv2 with the addition of an encrypted TLS tunnel similar to EAP-TLS.
Secure Password (EAP-MSCHAPv2)
the default selection for new connections and the strongest password-based mechanism in Windows 8, requires a certificate only at the server.
Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP)
encapsulates PPP traffic using the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol, supported only by clents running Windows Vista SP1 or later. Uses TCP port 443 same as SSL so administrators don't need to open an extra port
A virtual connection between a client and a server which encrypts data encapsulated inside.
virtual private network (VPN)
A connection, where the remote client and the remote access server are both connected to the Internet, using local service providers.
bassed on the IKEv2 Mobility and Multihoming (MOBIKE) protocol, which enables a computer to reconnect to a VPN server automatically, after an interruption as long as eight hours.
