Narrative conflict frequently between characters
a set of dramatic moments associated with a single dramatic relationship
Main Character
The character representing the main point and main perspective for the audience. It is their problem in which we are interested.
Impact Character
The character which provides the opportunity or force for the Main Character to change or stay the same.
Character archetype
A character representing one of several special functions in dramatic construction or perspective
A common character archetype- the charter who Drives the plot; Frequently also the Main Character
A common character archetype- the character or force which opposes the main character/protagonist
The Catalyst
The first dramatically significant action in a story. The catalyst "gets the ball rolling" dramatically.
Act I:
The opening portion of a story, before the dramatic goal is firmly established, in which the setting characters, and storytelling conventions are established.
First Turning Point
A moment in a story (in a feature film frequently 20-30 minutes in)
in which the dramatic goal of the story is established. The first turning point marks the end of Act I, and the beginning of Act II.
Dramatic goal
The dramatic question of the story, expressed in terms of the main
character or characters (i.e. will Luke beat the empire? Will E.T. return home? Will the lovers in Titanic live a long and prosperous life? Will Cale recreate Earth using Titan AE, etc.)
Act II:
The playing out of the initial implications of the dramatic goal.
Dark Moment
A moment of repose and frequently introspection before the second
turning point.
Second Turning Point
A moment of impetus later in a story that signifies the beginning
of the chain of actions (and reactions) that will resolve the dramatic goal. The second turning point marks the end of Act II and the beginning of Act III.
Act III:
The chain of events which resolve the dramatic goal.
The intense moment or series of moments that occur in Act III as the dramatic
goal approaches resolution.
A moment, usually at the height of the climax, in which the dramatic goal is
The portion of a story following the resolution which "wraps things up."
the discrepancy between what is said and what is meant, what is said and what is done, what is expected or intended and what happens, what is meant or said and what others understand.

Automatic Dialogue Replacement; the process of rerecording dialog in sync with the finished picture.

Digital Delay
a digital device that delays "echoes" of a sound before playing them
Digital editing
editing the sound of a sampled waveform
any device capable of altering a sound's character. Typically "filter" is used to
mean those which affect a sound's overall spectral characteristics.

opposed to "pitch" in music).
Localization (1)
The process of placing a sound in a virtual location (such as using
surround sound mixing in order to make a sound effect come from the rear of a hall)

The process of replacing dialogue so that a film can be marketed in a
second language.

"Motor Only Shot"- A scene that is filmed without sound
An audio effect which, when added to a sound, simulates a natural (or
unnatural) space.
Sound Design
The overall artistic conception of the use of sound in a film.
Sound track
The entire audio portion of a movie
Ambience track
The part of the mix containing the nonspecific background
sound of a space. Ambience is often used to create a sense of continuity within a scene. (the ambiance of the film)
Sound effects track
The part of the mix containing the specific sounds
associated with objects or actions in a scene, with the exception of dialogue and music.
Dialogue Track
The part of the mix containing dialogue and vocal material
Music track
The part of the mix containing the music.
Source Music/Diegetic Music
Music that appears to come from a source explicitly or implicity within
the scene (such as an onscreen radio, or rock band). Sometimes referred to as diegetic music.
Music that is not part of the onscreen story, that is added as commentary.
Sometimes referred to as non-diegetic music.
Split Chase
a cinematic form in which portions of two or more continuing scenes
alternate (usually at least one is a chase).
The process of deciding what music is to be added to a scene. Preproduction.
Creating an immersive sound environment through the use of speakers
surrounding the audience.
Temp Track
The addition of a temporary stock music track while a film is being edited
and previewed (i.e. before the finished score is added). Temp tracks are often used to improve editing, and communicate between directors, composers, producers, and sound designers
Inception- note
The musical cue played at the beginning of the film where we hear a repeated dark ominous tone is a slowed down version of "Non, je ne regret rein", that is used for the musical countdown.
