Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO)
Group formed in 1964 that represents many Palestinian nationalist groups
Yasir Arafat
First leader of PLO- Palestinian liberation organization. Used aggressive terrorism to try to destroy Israel. Very actice throughout the 1970's and 1980's. To try to make peace with Israel, was put incharge of Palestinean Authority (PA)
Intifada
Uprising mounted in 1987 by Palestinians in territory held by Israel
Camp David Accords
A peace treaty between Israel and Egypt where Egypt agreed to recognize the nation state of Israel
Yitzhak Rabin
The Israeli prime minister who agreed to grant the Palestinians their own land. In 1995 he was killed by Jewish extremists
King Hussein
King of Jordan from 1952-1999. Early on - engaged in secret diplomatic relations with Israel until Arab pressure convinced him otherwise. Conservative ally of the U.S. Sought U.S. aid during the Jordan Crisis in order to fight against the PLO. Was controversially offered Israeli aid, but did not accept Israeli ground troops in Jordan
Hamas
Militant Islamic fundamentalist political movement that opposes peace with Israel and uses terrorism as a weapon
Ayatollah Khomeini
A supreme religious leader of the Shiite group, and leader of Iran from 1979 to his death in 1989. The last decade of his life was filled with turmoil, notable the hostage crisis at the former U.S. Embassy in Tehran and the Iran-Iraq War
Islamic fundamentalism
Movement by Muslim reformers who oppose westernization and want to apply Islamic principles to problems in their nations
Taliban
A group of fundamentalist Muslims who took control of Afghanistan's government in 1996
Saddam Hussein
Was a dictator in Iraq who tried to take over Iran and Kuwait violently in order to gain the land and the resources. He also refused to let the UN into Iraq in order to check if the country was secretly holding weapons of mass destruction
Persian Gulf War
War in 1991 prompted by the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in which a coalition of European and Arab powers drove Iraq out of Kuwait
Kurds
Ethnic group that lives in parts of Iraq and Turkey. They often suffer persecution in both countries, and are currently under the protection of the United Nations in Iraq
