a person, usually white, who was in charge of the day-to-day operations of a plantation, including the discipline of slaves

the loose, informal network of individuals, hideaways, and safe havens that assisted slaves as they tried to escape to freedom
Fugitive Slave Act
Law that stated if an escaped slave was captured they had to be returned to their masters and that officials and citizens of free states had to cooperate in this law
