Conduction
The transfer of heat energy between substances that are in direct contact with each other. Heat transfers from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration until equilibrium is reached.
Convection
Transfer of heat energy through liquids and gases. The heat causes the fluid to move in an upward or downward motion. Warmer air and water will rise. Colder air and water will sink. Cool air holds less water vapor than warm air.
Light energy
Sun's energy that travels through space to the Earth.
Thermal energy
Another name for heat energy. Light energy is transformed into heat energy after it arrives on Earth. Heat energy is present in warm air and warm water.
Radiation
Transfer of energy in space through electromagnetic waves. The electromagnetic wave transfers this energy into heat when it comes in contact with an object.
Wind
The movement of air from areas of higher pressure to areas of lower pressure. This is caused by the differences in Earth's temperature.
Ocean Currents
The movement of ocean water.
Nuclear reactions
A process where two or more hydrogen atoms interact under pressure and weld or fuse together creating helium.
Fusion
A nuclear process where two or more nuclei combine to form a new atom with the release of energy. This process provides the energy we receive from the sun. Caused by the combination of the sun's heat and pressure.
Solar Energy
Energy from the sun known as solar radiation.
From the sun! The sun sends energy to the Earth in the form of light. This light energy is transformed into heat energy after it arrives on Earth.
How does the Earth gets it energy? How does it get here and then what happens to it?
Warm air and warm water rise; its thermal energy rises with it. The movement of ocean water and air contributes to the transfer of thermal energy from place to place.
How does thermal energy transfer from place to place around the Earth?
Sunlight increases the temperature of both the air and the land directly. The land increases the temperature of the air. The sun's energy is reflected, absorbed, and scattered in the atmosphere.
What is the relationship between the sun, temperature & air?
Wind moves air from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure which causes the differences in the Earth's temperature. Differences in the Earth's temperature are due to the sun's warming.
What is the relationship between the wind, air pressure, the rotation of the Earth and the sun's warming?
The sun's light energy leaves the sun and is reflected, absorbed and scattered in the atmosphere.
How is light energy from the sun transferred to heat energy?
The constant motion of the atmosphere from the energy of the sun reaching the surface of the Earth.
What causes different weather?
The Earth is closer to the sun in the winter, however, the northern hemisphere is tilted away from the Earth. Because it is tilted away, it gets less direct heat and light. Conversely, the Earth is further from the sun in the summer, it is tilted toward the sun and therefore, there is more direct heat and light making it warmer in the summer.
Why is it warmer in the northern hemisphere in the summer than in the winter?
