11th President of the United States; President during War with Mexico and Texas State Hood
Dred Scotts' master, John Emerson, a army Surgeon, took Dred Scott to Illinois, a free state. When Emerson died, Dred Scott was left to Emersons widow. Dred Scott filed a lawsuit against Mrs. Irene Scott for their freedom on grounds of previous residence in free territory. The case reached the Supreme court and they decided that Dred Scott was not free and Chief Justice Taney broadened the case by saying the ban on slavery in the Missouri Compromise was Unconstitutional. After the Decision, the former master's sons purchased Dred Scott and his wife and set them free.
Won the elevtion of 1856 and was 15th President of the United States, directly before the civil war.

Because of Popular Sovereignty, proslavery and antislavery settlers rushed into the Kansas Territory to vote for wether there would be slavery in the Kansas Territory. 5 thousand proslavery people voted in the election Illegally . Anti Slavery Settlers boycotted and a pro slavery mob attacked Lawrence (brunt hotel, etc) known as the Sack of Lawrence. Strong conflict between Pro and anti Slavery.
Senator Charles Sumner delivered a speech insulting proslavery forces in Kansas. Preston Brooks, defending the South, hit Sumner on the head with a can 30 times and broke his can.
Election of 1856
James Buchanan (South) won, The democrats has little to say about slavery and wanted to preserve the Union, the Republicans were against slavery and the American/know nothings were proslavery.
Election of 1860
Abraham Lincoln won the election and won the political race
1. Missouri would be admitted as a slave State
2. Maine would be admitted as a free state
3. No slavery above the 36'30 parallel
(Obvious fate)- Bring new states to the union, people believed the US was destined to expand to the pacific and spread its blessings of a democratic government.
President Jackson, van Buren and Tyler were reluctant to admit Texas as a State for fear of arousing sectional disputes over the spread of slavery.
