Lazarus's premise that the complexity of human personality can be divided into 7 major areas of functioning:
B = Behavior (overt, observable behaviors)
A = Affective responses (emotions, moods, feelings)
S = Sensations (basic 5 senses)
I = Images (how we picture ourselves, memories, dreams, fantasies)
C = Cognitions (insights, philosophies, opinions, self talk, judgments)
I = Interpersonal relationships (interactions with others)
D = Drugs, biological functions, nutrition & exercise (patterns and habits)
Multi-modal treatment begins with a comprehensive assessment of the client's 7 modalities and how they interact within the individual. Then 1 specific issue from each area is targeted for change. Clients learn a range of techniques to address their problem areas.
*Breadth more important than depth: the more coping responses the client learns, the less chance of relapse.
