Placenta
the placenta is the link between the baby and the mother. In the placenta, the baby's blood vessels are located next to the mother's blood vessels. The blood does not mix, but many substances are exchanged. The baby receives nutrients, oxygen, and other substances. It gives off carbon dioxide and other wastes.
Umbilical cord
a ropelike structure that forms between the fetus and the placenta. It contains blood vessels that link the fetus to the mother. This blood barrier that exists between fetus and mother does not let certain disease from spreading, however, it does not prevent alcohol, chemicals in tobacco and other drugs from passing.
Amniotic sac
the amniotic sac surrounds the embryo and develops into a fluid filled sac (amniotic sac). This fluid cushions and protects the developing baby.
