physical appearance or other characteristics of an organism resulting from its genotype; ex: tall or short
allele
one form of a gene; ex: T = tall or t = short
dominant
expressed over the recessive form of a trait; symbolized by a capital letter
recessive
only expressed in the presence of another recessive allele; must have 2 recessive alleles to express a recessive trait
homozygous dominant
2 dominant alleles = dominant expression of trait; ex: TT = tall
heterozygous
1 dominant allele and 1 recessive allele = domiant expression of trait; ex: Tt = tall
homozygous recessive
2 recessive alleles = recessive expression of trait; ex: tt = short
gene
segment of DNA that codes for a particular trait
trait
characteristic that can be genetically passed or inherited from parent to offspring

trait that is found only on the X chromosome
