What is the engineering notebook used for?
You should formally document, in chronological order, all work associated with a specific design project
What should you record in your notebook?
Written ideas, sketches(annotated), work session summaries, research findings and any interview information.
What is an engineer's notebook recognized as?
A legal document that can be used to patent ideas.
What are three things an engineering notebook can prove?
The origin of an idea that lead to a solution, to preove diligence in turning an idea to a solution, and to prove when an idea become a solution.
Why do organizations keep track of engineers notebooks?
To deal with the fact that priorites change and that people come and go.
Name three situations when organizations woud use the notebook.
1) A project is put on hold for weeks, months, or years.
2) A project member resigns or is reassinged.
3) A project member dies or retires.
What type of paper should an engineers notebook have?
Bound, GRID paper.
How should the pages be organzied?
Individually labeled by number in ink with the desginers signature and date on each page AND a witness's signature and date.
When a page carries on to another one, what should you do?
Have a location for identifiyng contents if you do carry on to one page from another.
Is there any situation when you can remove a page from your notebook?
No. No pages should ever be removed from your notebook.
Where should your notebook be stored when not in use?
In a safe location with each page dated and signed.
When you fill the notebook, what should you do?
Begin a new notebook exactly where you left off and archive the old notebook.
Can markers be used in the notebook?
Yes, but no markers that bleed through.
Are any types of paper allowed in the notebook?
No, loose leaf paper is never allowed in the notebook.
How should a mistake be crossed off ?
Clearly crossed of with the initials next to it. Never erase or remove anything.
