Terms in this set (23)
Algorithm
A step-by-step method for computing.
Distributive Property
When one of the factors of a product is a sum, multiplying each addend before adding does not change the product.
Dividend
A quantity to be divided.
Divisor
The quantity by which another quantity is to be divided.
Equation
A statement that two mathematical expressions are equal.
Exponent
The number that tells the number of times the base is multiplied by itself.
Expression
A variable or combination of variables, numbers, and symbols that represents a mathematical relationship.
Order of Operations
An order, agreed on by mathematicians, for performing operations to simplify expressions.
Multiplicand
The number that gets multiplied.
Multiplier
The number that you are multiplying by.
Partial Product
A product obtained by multiplying a multiplicand by one digit of a multiplier having more than one digit.
Partial Quotient
A multi-digit division method in which each step of calculation there will be a partial answer, these answers are added at the end to find the quotient.
Product
The result of multiplication.
Quotient
The result of the division of one quantity by another.
Remainder
The number that is left over after a whole number is divided equally by another.
Associative Property of Addition
The sum stays the same when the grouping of addends is changed. (a + b) + c = a + (b + c), where a, b, and c stand for any real numbers.
Associative Property of Multiplication
The product stays the same when the grouping of factors is changed. (a x b) x c = a x (b x c), where a, b, and c stand for any real numbers.
Commutative Property of Addition
The sum stays the same when the order of the addends is changed.
a + b = b + a, where a and b are any real numbers.
Commutative Property of Multiplication
The product stays the same when the order of the factors is changed.
a x b = b x a, where a and b are any real numbers.
Multiplicative Identity Property of 1
Multiplying a number by one gives a product identical to the given number. Also known as Identity Property of Multiplication.
Additive Identity Property of 0
Adding zero to a number gives a sum identical to the given number.
Measurement Division (Repeated Subtraction)
The action of separating something into parts, or the process of being separated.
Partition Division (Fair-Sharing)
Splitting into equal parts or groups. It is the result of "fair sharing".
