Environmental Science Ch 1
Terms in this set (29)
Interdisciplinary Science which means involves many fields of science
The study of interactions of living organisms with one another and with their environment
Study of air, water, and land surrounding a community
Study of living organisms
Study of the earth's nonliving systems and the planet as s whole
Study of matter and energy
Study of chemicals and their interactions
Study of human populations
2 main types of interactions
1) Use of natural resources and 2) how our actions alter our environment
Describe the 2 main types of interactions that the environmental scientists study.
1) use of natural resources
2) how our actions alter our environment
Describe the major fields of study that contribute environmental science
Biology, earth science, physics, chemistry, social sciences
People who obtain food by collecting plants and hunting wild animals or scavenging their remains
A dramatic impact of human societies and their environment. Many grasslands, forests, and wetlands and replaced with farmland.
Raising of crops and livestock for food
Allowed human populations to grow at an unprecedented rate
A shift of energy sources such as animals and running water to fossil fuel as coal and oil. Human population grew faster.
A closed system that has some potential problems.
Example- Your community discussing where to build a new landfill
Example- polluted river 1000 miles away affecting the region's water
Example- depletion of the ozone layer
A closed system, which means the only thing that enters the earth's atmosphere is large amounts of energy from the sun and the only thing that leaves is large amounts of heat
Environmental problems can be grouped into 3 categories
1) Resource depletion
3) loss of biodiversity
Undesirable change in natural environment (waste, heat, noise, radiation)
Are classified as renewable or no renewables
Resources can be replaced quickly. Example- energy from the sun
Form much slower.
Metals like iron
Variety of organisms in a given area
2 types of Pollutants
1) Biodegradable-can be broken down
2) nondegradable -can't be broken down
