Earthquake
vibration of the Earth due to the rapid release of seismic energy
Focus
the point within the Earth that the earthquake begins
Epicenter
the location on Earth's surface that is directly above the focus of the earthquake.
Seismic waves
waves of energy that are released when an earthquake ocurrs
Seismograph
the instrument that measures and records the arrival of seismic waves on a seismogram
P-waves
AKA primary waves or push pull waves; they are the fastest waves and can move through solid and liquid.
S-waves
AKA secondary waves; these are the slowest waves and can ONLY move through solids
shadow zone
is the area on the Earth after an earthquake that does not receive any seismic waves
Moho interface
AKA the Mohorovicic discontinuity; this is the boundary separating the crust from the mantle.
Fault
is a break in the Earth's crust where movement has occurred.
plate boundary
this is the location where two tectonic plates contact each other
