Chapter 2

Absolute Value Function
a function of the form f(x)=|mx+b|+c where m=/0
Constant of Variation
When x and y are variables you can write k=y/x so the ratio y:x equals the constant k
Dependent Variable
When the value of Y depends on the value of X;Y
Direct Variation
A linear function defined by an equation of the form y=kx where k=/ 0; as with any line the slope k is constant
The set of all inputs or x-coordinates of the ordered pairs
A relation in which each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element in the range
Independent Variable
When the value of Y depends on the value of X;X
Linear Equation
A way to represent a linear function
Linear Function
A function whose graph is a line
Linear Inequality
an inequality in teo variables whose graph is a region of the coordinate plane that is bounded by a line
Parent Function
The simplest function with these characteristics y=|x|
Point-Slope Form
The line through point (x1,y1) with slope m: y-y1=m(x-x1)
The set of all outs or y-coordinates of the ordered pairs
A set of pairs of input and output values
The ratio of vertical change to a corresponding horizontal change
Slope-Intercept Form
Standard Form
Shifts the graph horizontally, vertically, or both
Vertical-Line Test
A way to tell whether the relation is a function on a graph of a relation
The point at which the line crosses the x-axis
The point at which the line crosses the y-axis
