Matter
anything that has matter and takes up space; not forms of energy such as heat & electricity
Mass
the measure of the amount of matter an object contains (measures in units of grams (g))
Volume
the measure of space that an object takes up (measured in units of liters (L))
Density
the ratio of the mass of an object to its volume (measured in units of grams per liters (g/L))
Extensive Property
a property that depends on the amount of matter in an object
Intensive Property
a property that depends on the type of matter and not the amount
Substance
matter that has uniform and definite composition; either an element or compound
Physical Property
a trait of a substance that can be used for identification, without changing a composition of a substance
Solid
a form of matter that has definite shape and volume
Liquid
a form of matter that has an indefinite shape and definite volume
Gas
a form of matter that has both an indefinite shape and volume
Vapor
another word for gas (a liquid in gaseous form)
Metal
It is sometimes magnetic, conducts electricity & is a medium for heat
Metalloid
holds both metal and non-metal properties
Luster
a property of metal & means shiny
Malleable
a property of metal & can shift shape or bend
Ductile
a property of metal & can be made into wires
Conductivity
a property of metal that sends heats or electricity
Non-Metal
anything that isn't metal
Phase Change
a change in the physical state of a substance
Physical Change
a change in which some properties of a material change, but
Mixture
a blend of two or more substances without the use of a chemical reactions (physically blended)
Heterogeneous Mixture
a mixture that is NOT uniform in composition
Homogeneous Mixture
a mixture that IS uniform in composition
Solution
type of homogeneous mixture having something dissolved into something else
Phase
a part of a mixture that has the same composition and properties
Filtration
a process that separates a solid from a liquid in a heterogeneous mixture
Distillation
a process used to separate substances of different boiling points, either solids or liquids; the substance is then condensed back into a liquid
Element
most simple form of matter that has a unique set of properties and CANNOT be broken down into a simpler substance by a chemical reaction
Compound
a substance that contains two or more elements chemically combined and CAN be broken into simpler substances by a chemical reaction
Chemical Change
type of change in which a different type of matter is produced
Chemical Property
the ability of a substance to undergo a specific chemical change
Chemical Symbol
a one or two- letter representation of an element found on the Periodic Table
Chemical Reaction
when one or more substances react to form one or more substances
Precipitate
the formation of a solid during a chemical reaction
