Passive Transport
movement of materials across the cell membrane without using energy
Active Transport
movement of materials across the cell membrane that requires energy
Diffusion
movement of materials from an area where they are crowded to where they are not crowded
Osmosis
the diffusion of water
Cellular Respiration
the process that cells use oxygen to release energy stored in sugar.
Photosynthesis
process where chloroplasts change energy from the Sun into food
Chlorophyll
light absorbing pigment that traps energy in sunlight
Cells
the basic building blocks of life. They are the simplest level of organization.
Tissues
made up of many cells
Organs
a group of tissues
Organ Systems
A group of organs
Organism
A group of organ systems
Organelles
tiny structures that perform specific processes that keep the cell alive
Cytoplasm
the gelatin like substance that surrounds the organelles
Ribosomes
use instructions from DNA to make proteins
Nucleus
control center of the cell, it contains DNA that controls all the cell's activities
Mitochondria
powerhouse of the cell; cellular respiration occurs here to get energy from food
Lysosome
digests bacteria and worn out cell parts
Vacuole
stores water, wastes and other materials in the cell
Cell Membrane
covering of the cell, keeps organelles inside, lets materials in and out of the cell
Golgi Complex
packages material to be moved in and out of the cell
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
moves materials around the cell (with ribosomes)
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
moves materials around the cell (no ribosomes)
Cell Wall
provides the plant cell with shape and support
Chloroplasts
contain chlorophyll, which makes the cell green, and is where photosynthesis occurs, which lets the plant make its own food
