Homonin Phylogeny

- these prefixes without homo are limited geographically to Africa
- if it starts with Austra it comes form Africa
- All have morphologies that connect them to Homonins
- Look for size of brain & bipedalism
- Homo erectus is first homonin to go out of Africa (1.8 million years ago)

Sahelanthripus tchadensis

- discovered by Michel Brunet in 2002 in Chad (central africa)
- material includes:
1 distorted cranium, several jaw fragments, some teeth
- all dated to between 7-6 MYA based on relative faunal analyses

Orrorin Tugenensis

- Discovered by Brigitte Senut and Martin Pickford in 2000 in the Tugen Hills of Kenya
- materials include: some teeth, assorted jaw fragments, assorted portions of lower limbs, at least 5 individuals
- dated to between 6.1-5.7
- animal was apparently bipedal

Ardipithecus

2 species
- Ardipithecus Kadabba
- Ardipithecus Ramidus
- both discovered Tim White in Middle Awash Ehtipoia
- shows some features suggestive of hominin affinities and bipedality
- they estimate Ardi cranial capacity between 300-350 cc
- Ardi's has an abducted big toe (for climbing and not a sign of bipedality), its mid foot is really stiff life humans

Humans

- Today were are the only remaining hominin, but have we always been alone?

Other Hominins

- Homo neanderthalensis
- Homo erectus/ergaster
- We don't have strong evidence, but it seems likely that modern humans overlapped in space and time with H. heidelbergensis
- And don't forget about Homo floresiensis, while unlikely to be our close relative humans are certainly overlapped with them

Fossil Evidence 1

- oldest material is from Ethiopia followed by Middle East and South Africa
- These fossils all show the trade marks of human cranial features: chins, large brains, reduced brow ridges, mastoid processes
- But some of them appear more 'robust' than others
