First successful settlement, Virginia. Named after King James. Had a disastrous start (hunger/disease). Powhatan indians killed all colonists livestock, ruined farms. Went from 600 to 60 people. About to leave, but more colonists coming from England pushed them back. Tobacco created, highly profitable.
Beliefs and practices of Puritans. Puritans want to "purify" or reform the Church of England.
