What is Japan's geography like?
Japan is islands but are really just the tops of undersea mountains and volcanoes. Japan is near China and Korea, but is still isolated from Asia. 20% of Japan is plains near the coast.
Why did Japan develop a very different culture from those in other parts of Asia?
Japan developed a different culture because it was isolated from the rest of Asia. So, the Japanese developed their own culture with some things from Asia. They were isolated because they were islands.
Why did many Japanese accept control by this Yamato clan?
Many people accepted the Yamato clan in control because the Yamato rulers claimed to have a glorious family history. They believed they were descended from the most powerful of all kami, the goddess of the sun. Also, the Yamato clan had military might.
How did emperors take power in Japan?
Emperors took power in Japan by building up their clans army and set out to conquer the other clans. To become emperor, one clan had to be better than all the other clans in Japan. also, they had to be wealthy, have a good army, and have food in order for people to accept them.
What were the main cultural influence that China and Korea had on Japan?
-language: the Japanese spoke Japanese but wrote in Chinese

It is a group of nobles who live near and serve or advise a ruler. the nobles created this because they wanted to win the emperors favor by living close to him.

how did buddhism change in japan?
it changed because they created two different types- pure land buddhism (common people) and zen buddhism (warriors and upper class). the two different types were created for the time and money that people had.
how did the beliefs of en buddhists differ from those of other buddhists?
they were different because they though faith or good behavior couldn't lead to wisdom. instead, they thought people seeking wisdom should practice self-discipline and meditation.
how did the shogun rise to power in japan?
he rose to power in japan because the minamoto clan won the war and the emperor was busy in heian, so the leader of the minamoto clan became the most powerful man in japan. the shogun was a military leader from the minamoto clan and took over power because the emperor was in heian.
what was the difference between the heian emperor and the shogun?
the emperor was a figurehead and had fun with the performing arts in heian. the shogun was a powerful military leader and ruled in the emperor's name
