Anatomic Crown
Portion of the tooth covered with enamel
Remains the same throughout the life of the tooth
Clinical Crown
Portion of the tooth that is visible in the mouth
Becomes longer as surrounding gingiva recedes
Bifurcation
Division into two roots(tooth has two roots)
Trifurcation
Division into three roots(tooth has three roots)
Apex
The tapered end of each tooth root tip
Apical
Anything located at the apex
Periapical
Anything surrounding the apex
Cervix
Narrow area of tooth where the crown and root meet
Cementoenamel junction
Formed by the enamel of the crown and the cementum of the root
Also known as cervical line or CEJ
Enamel
Hardest material of the body, cannot repair itself but can remineralize
Root
Portion of tooth covered by cementum
Dentin
Largest portion of the tooth, harder than bone but not as hard as enamel, can repair itself
Pulp Chamber
Large at time of eruption but decreases in size with age
Apical foramen
Opening at apex of tooth root where blood vessels and nerves enter the pulp chamber
Cementum
Protects anatomic root and meets enamel at the CEJ
If exposed because of gingival recession, cementum is very sensitive and susceptible to decay
Periodontium
Consists of cementum, alveolar bone, and periodontal ligament
Periodontal ligament
Dense connective tissue that connect the cementum to the alveolar bone
Mandibular Arch
Lower arch
Only moveable bone in skull(TMJ)
Maxillary Arch
Upper arch
Fixed part of the skull
Quadrants
Divides each arch into 2 parts or halves
4 total
Sextants
Divides each arch into 3 parts
6 in total
Tooth Surfaces
Every tooth has 5 surfaces
Facial
Lingual
Masticatory
Mesial
Distal
Occlusal
Posterior teeth
Incisor Teeth
Anterior teeth
Single rooted
Sharp and thin edge
Central incisors
2 per arch
Mamelon
Ridge on incisal edge when first erupted
Lateral incisors
2 per arch
Most common tooth to be misshapen (peg lateral)
Congenitally missing(like me)
Canines(Cuspids)
Anterior teeth
Cornerstone of arch
Maxillary canine is longest tooth in mouth
Anything past canine is posterior teeth
Molars
Multiple roots(bifurcation, trifurcation)
Maxillary 1st molar- largest tooth in mouth
Premolars(Bicuspids)
First posterior teeth
Permanent dentition only(children don't have any)
Nonsuccedaneous
Don't replace baby teeth
Contact point
Spot where teeth touch each other
Embrasure
Triangular area leading to contact point
Occlusion
Contact between maxillary and mandibular teeth(teeth closing like chewing)
Dentition
Natural teeth
Edentulous
No teeth
Primary dentition
20 teeth
Also known as deciduous or baby teeth
Eruption
Movement of teeth in oral cavity
Exfoliation
Normal process of shedding primary teeth(baby teeth)
All primary teeth are exfoliated
Mixed dentition
A combination of primary and permanent teeth(baby teeth and adult teeth)
Ends when last primary tooth is shed at around age 12
Permanent dentition
Begins when last primary tooth is shed at about age 12
32 full permanent dentition
Universal/national system
Approved by ADA in 1968
Permanent teeth numbered 1-32
Maxillary 1-16
Mandibular 17-32
Primary teeth lettered A-T
Maxillary A-J
Mandibular K-T
International Standards Organization
Used in most other countries
Palmer notation system
Used in orthodontics
