Atmoshere/Mood

Round Character
Learns from mistakes and experiences, and continues to grow and develop
Flat Character
Does not learn from mistakes and experiences, and doesn't continue to grow and develop
Protagonist
Central charatcter
Antagonist
Character the protagonist struggles against; does not have to be human
Stock Character
Characters we have seen so many time before in our reading that we already can tell how they will act
Stereotypes
Simplistically portrayed and lacking individual characteristics
Conflict
The main problem in the story - it is usually introduced in the early stages
External Conflict
The conflict is with something outside the character
Internal conflict
The conflict is inside the mind of a single character
Plot
Series of events that happen in the story
Situation
Establishes the character and their setting
Rising Action
The series of events that builds up to the climax - they build up the tension in the story
Climax
The most exciting point in the story- it is often the turning point in the plot
Resolution/Denouement
Tidies up the loose ends in the story, any events that occur after the resolution
First person
Story is told using words like I or WE and the story relates only what the person can see, do, think, and feel
Third person
Narrator knows and tells the thoughts,feelings, and actions of several characters using words like, HE, SHE, THEY
Setting
The time and place the story takes place helps to create the mood and atmosphere of the story
Suspence
Keeps you wondering what is going to happen to the characters in the story
Symbolism
Anything in a story that suggests something else; usually visual, relate to the theme of the story, and are often people,objects or animals
Theme
Main idea the author is trying to get across in the story
Tone
How a writer expresses his or her views about a subject
Foreshadowing
When the author drops subtle hints about the plot developments to come later in the story
Flashback
When the writer presents events that happened before the time of the current events in the story
Genre
A type of class of writing according to PLOT, CHARACTERS, and SETTING
Falling Action
The events that fallow the climax
Narrator
A speaker or character who tells a story
