Radiation- heat transfers from the sun to you through empty space.
How does meat get heat in a frying pan?
Conduction-Heat goes from the burner to the pan to the meat. They are all directly touching.
Why does the metal handle of a saucepan get hot when it is on the stove?
Conductors allow heat to travel (spread) easily. Metal is a conductor so heat spreads through pans quickly.

Convection- Hot air is less dense so it rises

Radiation transfers heat to the pavement through empty space. Because the pavement is black, it absorbs more heat.
Why do you get warm standing in front of a fireplace?
Radiation- heat transfers from the fire to you through empty space.
Why is the second floor of a house usually hotter than the first floor?
Convection- hot air is less dense so it rises.
On a hot day, would you rather have a black umbrella to keep you cool or one made of Mylar (shiny)? Why?
Mylar because mylar is shiny and will reflect the heat keeping you cooler.
Why is the black pavement in a parking lot hotter to walk on than the concrete sidewalk?
Because the pavement is darker so it absorbs more heat. The sidewalk is lighter so it reflects more.
In a fish tank, a small heater in one corner makes all the water warm. How?
Convection- the water close to the heater warms up and rises beaches it is less dense. AS it moves away from the heater it cools off and becomes more dense and sinks. This cycle continues.
