Eleanor Clarke Slagle
A "pioneer of OT" whom the AOTA honors each year with 'her' lecture; Mother of OT. Social worker. Developed habit training.
Nurse. The first proponent for occupation in nursing. Saw the need for patients to do more activities. Used arts and crafts. Wrote a book entitled Studies in Invalid Occupations.
Susan Cox Johnson
Teacher of Arts and Crafts. Taught OT in NY
Worked with disabled veterans. Focus on TB treatment. One of the original NSPOT members; he was an architect. Established a presence for OT in vocational rehab and TB treatment.
The organization that later became AOTA; first met in 1917. Barton, Slagle, Johnson, Kidner and Newton were present at the first meeting.

Provided funds on a 50/50 basis. It has been expanded over the years to cover more disabilities.
Started in 1921. Formally NSPOT. Developed OT education standards, quality of OT services and access to services.
Caused an increase need for OT. Focus on polio. VA hospitals hired more OT'. Emergency course was offered for OT training.
Patients were released from mental health hospitals. Caused an increase in homelessness. More mentally ill clients in prisons. Poorly planned system. US movement in 70's meant to help the mentally ill move into mainstream society.
Created by Wilma West. 1965. The purpose was to advance research, leadership and scholarships for OT's. Have a student honor society. Mission is to advance occupational therapy to support peoples full support in meaningful life activities.
A government system that was enacted in 1965. Provides insurance to people on social security.
Rehab Act of 1973
President Nixon signed this. Helps people with disabilities in the work force.
Established care priority for those with severe disabilities and mandated that state agencies establish an order for most severe disabilities.

Made it possible for all children to have education even if they have a disability.
Technology Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988.
The act that covers a variety of technology for those with disabilities (high and low tech). Covers other things such as medical supplies, evaluations, fitting, repair etc.
Signed by George Bush. Access for all. No discrimination secondary to a disability. Can relate to community access (transportation, buildings, education, parking etc.).
Medicare system that provides a flat fee for services based on diagnosis/condition.
Balanced Budget Act of 1997 (BBA)
Bill signed by Bill Clinton to eliminate national debt in 1997. Caused loss of OT jobs for many.
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
Law that provides early intervention services. Includes OT services. Created a mandate for educationally relevant OT in the public school system
