Science Ch 2, Lesson 1 - Plant Life Cycles
Terms in this set (31)
what is a seed?
a structure that can grow into a new plant
Name some seeds that you can eat
corn, peas, nuts, lima beans, poppy seed
How does a seed help the embryo to survive?
A seed has a part that help an embryo survive. A seed holds stored food that the embryo uses to grow. A seed's tough covering protects the embryo.
what is an embryo?
an embryo is a small plant that just began to grow
How can a seed germinate?
A seed can germinate, when it is planted in the soil.
what does a seed need to germinate?
A seed needs water, nutrients, and the right temperature to germinate.
what is a fruit
a fruit is a plant structure that holds seeds
Name parts of a seed
Embryo, covering and stored food are part of a seed
Describe stages from a seed to a plant
A seed is planted in soil. The seed germinates. Roots start growing down into the soil. The roots grow longer and a stem pushes up out of the ground. The plant grows leaves. It starts to make its own food. In time, the plant grows, into an adult. Now it can reproduce and make new seeds.
what happens when a seed begins to germinate?
When a seed begins to germinate, it soaks up water. That makes it swell up and break through its coverings. The embryo grows out of the seed. It grows into a small plant called seedling.
What might happen to a seed if it does not get enough water?
A seed needs water to swell up and break through its coverings. If a seed does not get enough water then it will not germinate.
why is flower important to a plant?
flower is important to a plant because it makes seed and help plant to reproduce.
Name some flowering plants
Rose, Lilies, hibiscus
what is a flowering plant
A plant that use flowers to make seeds are called flowering plants.
Name two parts of a flower
A male part and a female part
How does a seed form
A flower has two parts that help it make seed, a male part and a female part. The male part makes a powder called pollen. The female part makes tiny eggs. When pollen and the egg come together, a seed can form.
How does pollen get to an egg?
Wind may blow pollen from one flower to another. Animals such as hummingbirds, bees, can carry pollen , too. Some animals are attracted to flower's smell or bright colors. They drink nectar from the flower. Sticky pollen clings to their bodies. Then, they carry the pollen to another flower.
what is pollination
The movement of pollen from the male part of a flower to the female part of a flower is called pollination.
what happens after pollination?
After pollination, seeds can develop. In flowering plants, fruit forms around the seed.
How does a seed travel to the soil?
Some seeds, such as a fuzzy dandelion's, are made to blow in the breeze. Other seeds fall to the ground inside of ripe fruit. The fruit rots and spills its seeds. Seeds such as acorns, may be buried by squirrels. Prickly seeds can stick to an animal's fur and be carried to a new place. When an animal eats fruit, the seeds may pass through the animal's body. They are left on ground in the animal's waste.
How do bright sweet smelling flowers help plants?
The bright sweet smelling flowers attract animals such as bees, hummingbirds. These animals drink nectar from the flower. Sticky pollen clings to their bodies. Then they carry the pollen to another flower.
Which animal eats berry as a whole and lets seed pass through its body and into the soil where seeds can grow again
What is a life cycle?
A life cycle is how a certain kind of organism grows, changes, and reproduces.
Describe stages of plant's life cycle?
A plant's life cycle includes germination, growth and death.
what happens when plant die?
when a plan die, they decompose, or break down, and become part of the soil. This adds nutrients to the soil that help other plants germinate, grow, and reproduce.
What is a cone
Cones are plant structures that make seeds.
what are conifers?
Plants that reproduce with cones are called conifers.
Give examples of conifers
Pine, spruce, and hemlock trees are conifers.
How are conifers and flowering plants similar? How are they different?
Conifers and flowering plants have similar life cycles. They both grow from seeds. Both reproduce and make new seeds through pollination. However, conifers make seed inside of cones instead of flowers.
How do conifers form seeds?
An adult tree makes male and female cones. Wind blows pollen from the male cones onto the female cones. so the pollination occurs and seed forms.
how are spores different from seeds? how are they similar to each other?
