Andrew Johnson
He was the 17th president of the US and he became president to Abraham Lincoln's assassination.
Reconstruction
The period after the civil war in which the states formerly part of the Confederacy were brought back into the United States. The south was divided into military districts.
Thaddeus Stevens
Member of the US house of representatives and one of the leaders of the Radical Republican faction. He was fierce opponent of slavery and discrimination against African-Americans.
Wade-Davis Bill of 1864
It was a bill that proposed for the reconstruction of the south written by two Radical Republicans.
Freedmen's Bureau
Established in 1865 by congress to help former black slaves and poor whites in the south aftermath of the civil war.
Black Codes
Were laws passed by southern states in 1865 and 1866, after the Civil War. They had the intent and the effect of restricting African-Americans' freedom.
14th Amendment
Granted citizenship to "all persons born or naturalized in the US".
15th Amendment
Granted African-American men the right to vote.
Scalawag
A person who behaves badly but in an amusingly mischievous rather than harmful way; a rascal.
Carpetbagger
A person from the northern states who went south after the Civil War to profit from the Reconstruction.
Hiram Revels
The 1st African-American senator.
Share Cropping
A system of agriculture in which a landowner allows a tent to use the land in return for a share for the crops produced on the land.
Tenet Farming
Is an agricultural production system in which landowners contribute their land and often measure of operating capital and management.
Jim Crow Laws
When souther legislature passed laws of racial segregation direct against blacks at the end of the 19th century.
KKK (Ku Klux Klan)
It was a secret organization in the southern US created by many former Confederate veterans, which aimed to suppress the newly acquired powers of black and to oppose carpetbaggers from the north.
Panic of 1873
It was a financial crisis that triggered a depression in Europe and North America that lasted from 1873 until 1879.
Redemption
The action of regaining or gaining possession of something in exchange for payment, or clear in debt.
Samuel Tilden
Was the 25th Governor of the New York and democratic candidate.
Home Rule
Self-government in local matters by a city, province, state, colony or the like.
Lincoln's Reconstruction Plan
It was based on forgiveness. It was his plan to announce his intentions to reunite the once-united states (the north and the south).
Johnson's Reconstruction Plan
He planned to rebuild the US by readmitting southern states once they had rewritten their states constitution.
Radical Reconstruction
The Radical Republicans passed four reconstruction acts, when the Republicans took charge of the Congress. (1; ratify the 14th amendment, 2; write the new state constitution that guaranteed freedmen to vote, 3; form new governments).
