matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space and has weight.
property
A characteristic of matter that can be observed or measured. Features of qualities that can be used to describe something.
mass
The amount of matter making up an object.
volume
A measure of how much space matter takes up.
buoyancy
The upward force of a liquid or gas on an object.
physical change
Does not change the particles that make up matter.
chemical change
Produces a completely different kind of matter. They are changed to form a new substance.
metric system
A system of measurement based on units of ten.
length
The number of units that fit along one edge of an object.
area
The number of unit squares that fit inside a surface.
density
The amount of matter in a given space.
In scientific terms, it is the amount of mass in a unit of volume.
weight
The measure of the pull of gravity between an object and Earth.
gravity
A force of attraction, or pull, between objects.
atom
The smallest part of an element.
element
Substance made up of only one type of matter.
solid
Matter that has a definite shape and takes up space. *Packed TIGHTLY together.
liquid
Matter that does not have a definite shape. It takes the shape of its container. Atoms are CLOSE together but can slide around.
gas
Takes up space of container. The atoms are SPREAD OUT and move freely.
boiling point
Liquid water turns into water vapor at 212 degrees Fahrenheit.
freezing
Liquid water turns into a solid at 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
condense
When water vapor turns into liquid water.
evaporate
When liquid water slowly dries up and turns into water vapor.
Newton
The metric unit for weight.
mixture
A combination of two or more substances. They can be separated.
solution
One or more substances that are dissolved in another substance.
solubility
The ability of one substance to dissolve in another. Measure of the amount a substance will dissolve into another substance.
