Texts
a broad term which includes written, visual and spoken items such as books, magazines, blogs, posters, speeches, and so on.
Context
refers to the circumstances which surround the writing of and reading of a text. Purpose and audience are good starting points for understanding this.
Context of composition
refers to the factors that influence a writer when creating a text, such as time, place and personal experience.
Context of interpretation
refers to the factors that can influence a reader of a text, such as time, place and personal experience
Audience
refers to the readers, viewers and listeners of a text. Includes factors such as age, race, gender, level of education, geographic location, and so on.
Purpose
refers to a reason why a text is created. Four main reasons for this: to inform, to instruct, to persuade and to entertain.
Genre
refers to the type or category of text. Can be broad such as literary or non-literary, or more specific such as horror, mystery, romance, and so on.
Content
refers to what happens in a text, in terms of action, events, people and places.
Diction (lexis)
refers to the choice of vocabulary which a writer uses to create a tone.
Written stylistic devices
refers to the large range of language techniques writers use to achieve their purpose.Personification, metaphor, similes and so on are examples.
Structure of discourse
refers to the order in which writers organise their ideas to suit their purpose. Hint: Look for the arrangement or development of ideas towards a conclusion in a text.
Graphology
refers to the way a text looks (layout), which can be important in conveying the message. Use of white space, font choice and size, headings/subheadings, image selection and placement are all part of this.
Register
refers to the level of formality or informality in the language used in a text. Depends on the writer's intended purpose and audience.
