federalism
A system in which power is divided between the national and state governments
division of powers
Also called the separation of powers. This is the term used to describe the delegation of rights and responsibilities to governmental branches.
delegated powers
Powers specifically given to the federal government by the US Constitution, for example, the authority to print money.
expressed powers
Powers that are expressed in the constitution
implied powers
Powers inferred from the express powers that allow Congress to carry out its functions.
inherent powers
Powers that grow out of the very existence of government.

Powers given to the state government alone
exclusive powers
Those powers that can be exercised by the National Government alone
concurrent powers
Powers held jointly by the national and state governments.
supremacy clause
Article VI of the Constitution, which makes the Constitution, national laws, and treaties supreme over state laws when the national government is acting within its constitutional limits.
