Algebraic expression
An expressions built up from an integer constants, variables, and the algebraic operations.
Variable-
Not constant or having a fixed pattern
Evaluating an algebraic expression
The sequence details the order you follow to. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
. Equation
a statement that the values of two math expressions are equal
Formula
a math relationship or rule expressed in symbols.
Mathematical modeling
a description of a system using math concepts and language.
Mathematical model
the process of math modeling
Solving an inequality
Finding all of its solutions. A "solution'' of an inequality is a number which when substituted for the variable makes the inequality a true statement.
Term(s)
is either a single number or variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together.
Linear inequality in one varaiable
A linear inequality divides a plane into two
parts.
Coefficient
a numerical constant quantity placed before and multiplying the variable in algebraic expressions.
Combined variation
describes a situation where a variable depends on two (or more) other variables, and varies directly with some of them and varies inversely with others (when the rest of the variables are held constant).
Numerical term
of or relating to a number or series of numbers.
Varies inversely as x
if y varies inversely as x , and x = 5 when y = 2 , then the constant of variation is k = xy = 5(2) = 10 . Thus, the equation describing this inversevariation is xy = 10 or y = .
Constant
a number by itself
Inverse variation
math relationship between two variables which can be expressed by an equation in which the product of two variables is equal to a constant.
Factors
- a number or quantity that when multiplied with another produces a given number or expression
Constant of variation
the ratio between two variables in a direct variation or the product of two variables in an inverse variation.
Like terms
whose variables are the same (and exponents)
Equation of variation
math relationship between two variables that can be expressed by an equation in which one variable is equal to a constant times the other.
Combining like terms
a process used to add or subtract polynomials.
Simplified
to put into simpler form by cancellation of common factors.
Linear equation in one variable
an algebraic equation in which each term is either a constant or the product of a constant.
Ratio
the quantitative relation between two amounts showing the number of times one value contains or is contained within the other
Solving an equation
fulfill a condition stated in the form of an equation.
Proportion
an equation stating that two rations are equal.
. Solution(s)
any and all values of the variable that satisfies an equation, inequality, ext.
Capture - recapture method-
an estimation in the populations size
Varies directly as x
"y varies directly as x" , means that when x increases, y increases by the same factor. In other words, y and x always have the same ratio.
Solving a formula for a variable
to isolate the variable w ,you should divide both sides of the formula by ih to isolate the variable w, you just need to divide both sides by I and h
Root(s)
the symbol in which always means the positive square root.
Satisfies the equation
aka solutions
The multiplication property of equality
states that if you multiply both sides of an equation by the same number, the sides remain equal.
The addition property of equality
states that if the same amount is added to both sides of an equation, then the equality is still true.
Solution set
the set of values that satisfy a given set of equations or inequalities.
. Equivalent equations
expressions that are the same even though they may look different.
