Chemical element
Energy stored in the bonds of chemical substances
Atomic number
the number of protons which determine the chemical properties and its place in the periodic table
Atomic mass
total mass of the protons and neutrons in an atom, measured in atomic mass units
Atomic weight
average of the mass numbers of all isotopes
Compound
a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds
Mixture
are substances composed of two or more components physically intermixed : the basis type : solutions, colloids and suspensions
Molecule
combination of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds
Solutions
are homogeneous mixtures of components that may be gases, liquids, or solids.
Colloids
called emulsions, are heterogeneous mixture, which means that their composition is dissimilar in different area of the mixture
Suspensions
are heterogeneous mixtures with large, often visible solutes that tend to settle out. ex.sand and water
Anabolism
The sum total of all processes in an organism which use energy and simple chemical building blocks to produce large chemicals and structures necessary for life
Catabolism
The sum total of all processes in an organism which break down chemicals to produce energy and simple chemical building blocks
Isotope
one of two or more atoms with the same atomic number but with different numbers of neutrons
Radioisotope
an unstable isotope of an element, which undergoes radioactive decay
Four elements that form the bulk of the body
carbon , oxygen , hydrogen, and nitrogen make up 96% of body weight
Atom
smallest particle of an element
subatomic particles
protons, neutrons, and electrons
Protons
positively charged particles located in the nucleus
Neurtons
are neutral , so the nucleus is positively charged overall
Electrons
negatively charged particles found outside the nucleus
