Zoroastrianism
A system of religion founded in Persia in the 6th century BC by Zoroaster. It was the first religion to preach judgment day upon death.
Imperial bureaucracy
division of an empire into organized provinces to aid in maintaining control
Royal Road
A road commissioned by King Darius that stretched 1,600 miles across the empire.
Darius I
king of Persia who expanded the empire and invaded Greece but was defeated at the Battle of Marathon (550-486 BC)
Cyrus II
Created the Persian Empire by defeating the Medes, Lydians, and Babylonians; was known for his tolerance and allowance of existing governments to continue governing under his name
Zoroaster
Persian prophet who founded Zoroastrianism (circa 628-551 BC)
Xerxes
Persian king who invaded Greece and destroyed Athens.
