science chapter 1: oceanography 7a
Terms in this set (22)
Name the 3 groups of marine life.
Benthos, nekton, and plankton
Which group lives on the ocean's surface?
Name the 2 groups of plankton.
Zooplankton and Phytoplankton
What is the difference between zooplankton and phytoplankton?
Zooplankton- animal like (doesn't make its own food)
Phytoplankton- plant like (makes its own food from sunlight)
What are organisms that swim actively in the open ocean called?
What are organisms that live in or on the ocean floor called?
What criterion is used to determine the ocean's ecological zones?
They determine it by where different types of benthos live.
What is the benthic enironment?
It is the bottom of the ocean, it is the region near the ocean floor and all the organisms that live in or on it.
What is the intertidal zone?
The intertidal zone is the shallowest benthic zone. It is located between high and low tide.
List 5 organisms that live in the intertidal zone.
Describe the subliteral zone.
The subliteral zone begins where the intertidal zone ends. It extends down to 200m below sea level and extends to the continental shelf.
Describe the bathyal zone.
The bathyal zone extends from the edge of the continental shelf to the abyssal plain. The depth ranges from 200m to 4,000m below sea level.
What is the abyssal zone?
The abyssal zone is located on the abyssal plain. No plants and few animals live there. It can reach up to 4,000m in depth. It is the largest ecological zone.
Describe the hadal zone.
The hadal zone is the deepest benthic zone. It can reach up to 7,000m in depth. It contains ocean trenches and few animals.
Where is the pelagic environment?
It is the middle depth of the ocean. It has 2 zones the oceanic and nerectic.
Describe the nerectic zone.
The nerectic zone covers the continental shelf.
Describe the oceanic zone.
The oceanic zone includes the volume of water that covers the entire sea floor, except for the continental shelf.
What is the deepest benthic zone?
located near the bottom of the ocean floor.
near the ocean's surface and at the middle depth of the ocean.
Describe why organisms in the intertidal zone must be able to live under water and on exposed land.
Organism in the intertidal zone must be able to line underwater and on exposed land because twice a day the zones changes, as the tide flows in and as the tide flows out. As the tide flows out the zone is exposed to air and sun.
How would the ocean's ecological zone's change if the sea level dropped 300m?
The shore line would move down to the continental slope and this change would cause many organisms to find new places to live.
