What is diabetes mellitus?
A disease in which the body doesn't produce (type1) or properly use insulin (type2) leading to hyperglycemia
Insulin-dependent diabetes?
Type 1 DM; autoimmune form; beta cells of pancreas are destroyed and cannot produce any insulin
non- insulin dependent diabetes?
Type 2 DM; insulin resistant; pancreas is still able to produce some form of endogenous insulin; this is the most common form of diabetes
The difference between diabetes insipidus and diabetes mellitus?
Insipidus is a pituitary disorder and deals with water metabolism and fluid balance
