Circulatory System (& the body)
Everything you need to know about the circulatory system.
Terms in this set (13)
the order of blood through the heart
The right Atrium, the right Ventricle, then into the lungs, and then into the left atrium, then to the left ventricle and then it leaves the heart through the aorta
Tiny blood vessels. In the capillaries, materials are exchanged between the blood and the body's cells. They are only one cell (layer) thick.
Blood flows through them after exiting the capillaries. The veins take blood back to the heart. Veins have three layers. Larger veins have a valve in them that prevent blood from flowing backwards.
A blood vessel that takes blood away from the heart. Three layers thick, layers thicker than the vein layers. Coronary arteries carry the blood to the heart itself. Others go to the brain, intestines, etc.
when the blood enters the heart what diffuses in and out
blood becomes oxygenated so oxygen diffuses in and carbon dioxide diffuses out.
What is blood consisted of?
Red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets.
White blood cells
They are produced in marrow. They are the body's disease fighters. There are fewer white than red blood cells. They can live for months or even years.
Platelets are cell fragments that play an important part in forming blood clots. When a blood vessel is cut, they stick to the side of the wound. It starts a chain reaction.
Red blood cells
They take up oxygen in the lungs and deliver it to cells elsewhere in the body. Produced in bone marrow. Flexible, which enables them to squeeze through capillaries. It is made of hemoglobin which carries the oxygen. Wthout oxygen, they are dark red, with oxygen, they are bright red.
The liquid in the blood. It is 90% water. Protein molecules give it its yellow color.
Diffusion in the small intestine
Water diffuses out of the waste and into the blood stream. Nutrients diffuse into the blood into the small intestine.
Diffusion in the kidney
Urea diffuses out of the kidney.
An area of muscle tissie that separates the oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood within the heart.
