Helen: Umm...Professor...Umm. (Turns to Stacy looking very confused)
See, it wasn't that bad, was it? You were pretty good.
V'LA L'BON VENT
Helen sings with a confused look throughout the entire song and finishes with obviously the wrong pose. The arch splits up and Stacy looks for Helen.
S: Oh, totally!
H: Really?
Stacy: Of course! Let me know if you need any more help with music. It's pretty much my life.
Helen: Thank you so much.
Stacy: I'm Stacy, by the way.
Tulip: That was just fabulous, girls! Ok, so for next class, let's work on this new piece. (hands out piece). When we meet again, we'll add some choreography and put it al together! Oh, this is so exciting! See you all next week!
Helen starts packing up to go to her next class and Stacy approaches her.
Stacy: Wait, that's so weird! Do you want to join us? We're going to go buy old Broadway scores and scripts and act them out!... It's a thing, I swear.
Helen: Oh, no way! It's mine too!
Stacy: I would love to stay and chat, but I actually have to get going. (whispers loudly) It's my birthday!

Helen: That sounds..um, cool, but I think I'm going to head back home to my mom. I mean, ...uh, she's waiting for me, so I should probably head back.
S: (Singing and bowing) Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Stacy's sister: Yeah, happy birthday, sis.
S: Oh, it was great mom! Sharpay, Gabriella, and Beca took me shopping and they got me the BEST present ever!!!
S Mom: So how was school today, honey?
S: THE SHEET MUSIC FROM OKLAHOMA!
Sis: (unamused and softly so Stacy doesn't hear) Let me guess... the sheet music from Oklahoma...?
Stacy: Why do you have to be so annoying?
Sis: (sardonic) What a surprise...
S: Hey! I study too! And you know I'm only taking that class again because it's the only theatre class our school offers....ugh, I can't wait to go to college and actually be able to sing all day without having you yapping at me all the time...I just—
Sis: Yeah, taking theatre class for the fourth time..? Singing every living second, even when I'm studying for my exams...
Stacy: I wish I could just sing. I wish everyone could just sing. I wish my life was a musical! (sings) I wish! (like from Into the Woods)
S Mom: Thank you G. ( hugs G and then to Stacy) Happy birthday sweetheart! Make a wish!
S: You mean... MY kitchen?
H: what in the world are you doing in my kitchen?!!
S: Umm, good-bye.
S Mom: Good bye, girls. Have a lovely day at school!
S: (Only addressing to Helen and trying to keep it under the radar) Umm...
Physics class
There are chairs in the back of the stage. No desks. Helen is already seated and ready for her exam. Stacy walks in, says hi to her friends, notices Helen and sits next to her.
S: Before the scene change? Umm... yeah! Wasn't that absolutely AWESOME?!
H: So about what just happened...
S: You mean like dancing and singing allll dayyy? Oh, I WISH! That was so incredible!!
H: Um, I'm not exactly sure that's the word I would use. But...um...(pause) so is this something you guys normally do around here?
S: oh, yes. Of course. The exam. Please, don't let me stop you.
H: Umm, yeah. Sure. Ok, glad to know this was a onetime thing. I'm not really the best dancer.(Awkward pause) Well, umm, if you don't mind, I'm going to go over my notes before the exam...
S: O.M.G. This is ACTUALLY happening!!! My life IS A MUSICAL!
WINGS
S: Mom, what are you doing here?
S Mom: Umm, I'm so sorry to hear that. Professor Van, Johnvaljohn..? Uh, I just need to hand this to my daughter..?
S: No.
S mom: I'm sorry to interrupt, baby, but I had to come! (to the class) Oh, I'm just so proud of her! (back too Stacy) Honey, look at what arrived in the mail this morning when you left for school!!!
pulls out a letter
S: IIIIIIIIIIII HAVE AN AUDITION!!
S Mom: Is that a good scream?
S: screams. FOR JULLIARD! This is the best day of my life!! I have to go prepare my audition song. Oh, I have so much to do. What am I gonna sing? Wait, should I...no, I mean, maybe, but then if I sing that...no it's fine. They'll love it. Right? Right?
Gabriella: (super excitedly) THAT'S AMAZING!...(pause) what for?
S: I'm going to go rehearse right now!! (to the friends) (to mom) I'll see you after school, mom.
Friends and mom: (simultaneously) Yes. Of course. Totally. Definitely.
S: I did horribly at my audition. I don't think I'll get in.
H: Stacy, are you ok? What's wrong?
S: No, you don't understand. I can feel it. I know I didn't get in. (sobs) I wanted this so badly. I don't know what I'm going to do!
H: Oh, Stacy, that's not true! Why would you say something like that? I'm sure you killed that audition! Besides, they won't send out acceptance letters for a few weeks, right. So you can't possibly know!
S: Here goes nothing...(breathes and opens the letter)
It's been 2 weeks and any day now she should be getting the letter from Julliard. Stacy looks through the letters and finds the letter she was looking for. SQUEALS, and looks at her mother. The mom smiles and nods for Stacy to open the letter.
S: Can we please not? This is not the time. Can you guys just leave!
S Mom: Oh, sweetie. I'm so, so sorry. Come here baby. It's going to be fine. Mommy is here.
Her friends get up and more people start coming in from the black curtains. They start singing Embraceable You.
S: Can't you go off-script, just this one time!
Sharpay: I'm sorry. We can't. It's written in the script.
S: (in tears) What am I going to do?
Beca: I'm sorry, Stace. People came to see this play, so we have to stay on script.
Stacy shakes her head and then hides it in her hand, crying. They she starts singing along, but she will stay in the sheets, sad. When the number is done, everyone stays in the room and looks at Stacy.
S: It's ok, Sharpay. I'll get over it.
Sharpay: Oh, there she comes! Just don't mention anything about Julliard, ok?
S: (without much energy) I didn't get in.
H: Wait, what happened, Stacy?
S: I don't know what I am going to do. (awkward silence...Helen trying to piece words together and failing miserably). This is the only thing I'm good at. This was my dream. I need to go to Julliard. I NEED to sing. Singing is my life! It's the only thing I know how to do...
H: Oh, Stacy. I am so sorry. I don't understand how that's possible...(puts her arm around her and tries to comfort her)
S: What does it matter now? I'll never be able to learn it professionally and become a classical performer.
H: Oh, that's not true! You are so talented Stacy. Why would you say that?
S: (so confused) Professor?
Jean: Miss Stacy?
S: Oh, umm, thank you Professor Valjean.
Jean: I'm sorry to interrupt, but, as I was going through and grading the exams, and I must say I'm very impressed so far, and I'm not easily impressed. Prison does things to you. (mutters) Look down, you're standing in your grave. (stares into the open, then comes back to reality) Excuse me, umm, as I was saying, I was going through the exams and I found this letter between all of the papers, and I think it belongs to you.
S: Uh, thank you professor. You as well.
Jean: My pleasure. I like helping people out. Since I was saved by the mercy of a priest. May you be blessed, child.
S: I am in NO mood to open any letters at this point. I think I'll go crazy if I read another one.
H: Well, won't you open the letter?
S: Sure, I guess. Why not.
H: Well, can I see it?
S: Jud? Again? (sigh)
H: Oohh, this one's from Jud?
S: Please stop.
Gaby: He's a total stalker. (grabs letter)
"My dearest Stacy,"...
S: You have no idea! This has been going on since freshman year! And I already told him I wasn't interested.
H: Or maybe not?
S: Well, I'm glad one of us enjoys singing. It's like you said, music is useless. And even if the world is a musical, we still have the same problems.
H: Well as unproductive as that was, it did lighten the mood. I could get used to this world-being-a-musical thing.
Stacy: Hey Helen. What're you doing?
Stacy walks on Helen trying to do the cup thing. There are cups on the table.
Stacy: Wait, you joined a singing group?
Helen: Oh Stacy, hey! Actually can you help me with this. I joined an after school singing group and I have to learn some cup thing for a warmup.
Stacy: No, that's totally cool. I'm so glad that you found a way to fit in here. Now we can sing together!
Helen: Yea, I realized that I don't have to only like physics. I can also love music at the same time. Sorry, I didn't mean to sound like a Common App essay...
Stacy: Sure! (helen pulls out music) Oh no, I already know this one.
Helen: Speaking of which, da fuq is dis sawdy-ass cup jawn. Bitches be drawlin. (but actually can you help me with this cup thing)
S: Are you sure? I mean...it's ok I guess.
H: Stacy, this is amazing! I can't believe you actually wrote a song! This is incredible!
S: Waaa I'm so excited!!!!!
H: No Stacy, this is amazing! And you're performing this at the Lollapalooza Music Festival? I'm so proud!
S: Thanks Helen!! It means the world to have your support. You truly are such a great friend! (Hug it out) By the way, did you ever hear back from Penn? Did you get in?
H: You're going to be great!
S: That's so great to hear! I'm so excited for next year!
H: Quaker for life! (wearing a Penn sweater)
S: Oh I don't know. I guess some plot points got resolved while we were having our character arcs.
H: I totally agree! I'm going to miss you so much. Oh yea, whatever happened to that stalker guy?
S: I would love to.
H: Stace, would you do me the honor of singing one last time?
S: Dance? Musical? Someone?
H: Umm... I said... we're going to sing?
S: Oh, and now when we finally figure out our lives and resolve our character conflicts everyone decides to stop singing...? I guess we'll just have to do it ourselves. (turn to piano player) Brad, would you do the honors?
H: Anyone?
