Thesis: The American Revolution had it's roots in the enlightenment ideals, disputed taxation, and the end of salutary neglect.

enlightenment ideals: social contract, great awakening, Locke, no divine right to rule

taxation: taxation without representation, internal and external taxes, lead to boycotts and sons of liberty

salutary neglect: parliament passed many acts that the colonists didn't like, for example the quartering act, and the intolerable acts, the colonists had always passed their own acts, but now they could do anything to change these acts

Thesis: The relationship between the British and the Colonies changed because of the Seven Year's War, before the war Britain had salutary neglect on the colonies, colonists were allowed to expand west, after the war they imposed a stricter rule on the colonies and colonists were not allowed to move west, in contrast Britain's mercantile policy didn't change.
salutary neglect: British enforced their policies (sugar act of 1764), navy enforced, smugglers were tried in vice admiralty courts.
expand west: colonists saw western land as an opportunity for better lives, after seven years war the proclamation of 1763 creates a line that is illegal to cross, this angered the colonists
mercantilism: Britain passed the 1663 staple act that enforced mercantilism ( goods lists must be shipped on english ships). After the war they passed the stamp act with other mercantile policies. They also instituted the lords of trade the enforce these policies, navigation acts

Thesis: The American Revolution changed many aspects politically in that a new government was created, economically they were no longer protected by the British, and socially there was more equality.

New Government: the articles failed and they needed a new government, two plans (Virginia and New Jersey), compromise, constitution, more effective, could tax
No British Protection: Barbary pirates had to pay their own dues. Britain no longer accepted their exports. Massive debt from war and no one to bail them out. Bank of United States was created. Hamilton's reports on public credit and manufacturing helped sort out economic problems

More Equality: voting restrictions were lessened, slavery started being abolished in some states, also abolished in northwest territory by northwest ordinance 1787.

Thesis: While the Articles were weak and had problems such as no control over the masses, a large debt, and a weak economy, the Constitution fixed these problems politically by creating a stronger central government, economically by allowing Hamilton's financial plan and the ability to tax.

no control over masses/central gov: standing army versus no, didn't allow states to make own decisions, shares versus whiskey and 12,000 troops

Large Debt/financial plan: This was solved by the report on public credit and manufacturing. There would be a national debt and paid face value the bonds.

ability to tax/weak economy: This solved the weak economy because it limited the buying of imports. There was a tax on imports so americans would buy american made goods. This gave americans better business

Thesis: The Articles better fulfilled the ideal of taxation, while the constitution better protected the rights of the people and better represented the enlightenment ideals

Taxation: no taxation without representation - no taxation is solution and don't want tyranny

Equality: a bill of rights was added in 1791 in order to protect minority rights from tyranny, protect the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness , lessened the property requirements to vote

Thesis: The US Constitution changed many aspects politically, in that it formed a strong central government, and economically they instituted Hamilton's financial plan.

Strong Central Government: this was a large change from the articles of confederation- turning point, this allowed the central government to have power over the states which made the government run much more smoothly, power of taxation

Hamilton's Financial Plan: This allowed the United States to turn their economy around, it created the bank of the United States and a uniform currency, turning point to make their economy great and a world wide power

Thesis: The Domestic policies of Hamilton's financial plan separated the founding fathers into opposing factions, foreign affairs such as of the french revolution and their struggling relations with Britain also shaped american politics.

Opposing factions: Federalist - Hamilton, John Adams, GW, strong central government and loose interpretation of the elastic clause, government needed to intervene in the economy, split caused by Hamilton's financial plan

French Revolution: entangling alliance, debated over whether to support the french, do we surrender trade or honor obligation, proclamation of neutrality 1793

Struggling Relations with Britain: led to Jay's Treaty of 1795, much disputed because the united states acknowledged GB's right to seize cargo and others

Thesis: Both the Whiskey Rebellion and Shay's Rebellion had to do with disagreements over taxes, conversely Shay's rebellion demonstrated the weakness of the articles of confederation, while the Whiskey rebellion showed the strength of the constitution.

Disagreements over taxes: property taxes were 1/3 of farming income, farmers already suffering from low prices, couldn't pay the debt, many foreclosures

Weakness of Articles: Shay led an army of 1,200 to march on Boston and break into armory in Springfield, MA state legislature appeals to the Articles for assistance, merchants in Boston hire and army to put down the rebellion (mercenary)

Disagreements over taxes: Hamilton instituted a tax on whiskey, It was a sin tax and a revenue raiser, it was much cheaper to transport and sell whiskey that corn and made more money

Strength of Constitution: GW class 12,000 soldiers and leads them to PA to put down the farm rebellion, some were arrested and 2 sentenced to death (pardoned), constitution can enforce laws unlike the articles

Thesis: The new government of the US faced similar issues to those that troubled British government, such as a massive debt, but the US also faced their issues of their own such as a rebellion, and the french revolution.

Debt: massive debt no way to pay off bonds, Britain still had a massive debt from the revolution war, US solved this by putting in place Hamilton's financial plan

Whiskey Rebellion: rebellion because of unfair taxes, us constitution was able to put it down with troops

French Revolution: XYZ affair, treaty of neutrality, entangling treaty
