Medical treatment in the Black Death?
Some of the causes they thought were
- The Bad smells, the doctors prescribed herbs and crushed flowers for the patient to smell.
Some doctors told their patients to inhale the 'bad smells' thinking they would counteract each other and encouraged patients to sit in smoke filled rooms
They also thought that the victims had 'bad blood' and bled the patient
-By using leaches and knives, they drained litres of blood off the victims.
The shortage of workers caused the crops and livestock to die from neglect and gave the people less food. Also there wasn't as many people or pay taxes.
Beliefs about the causes
The sense of helplessness caused the people to go to extreme lengths to find someone to blame.
- Jews were thought to have poisoned the wells, causing the Black Plague to spread.
The Jews were tortured and burned alive
- Lepers (people with a skin disease called leprasy) thought their skin disease was a sign of them being evil and killed them like the Jews.
Some people thought it was the bad smells causing the plague
What were the responses to the Black Death?
The wealthy people tried to escape into country estates, in an attempt to avoid the plague. Other people took sanctuary in holy places, hoping that would protect them.
- Peasants also dressed up as people in the social pyramid and danced to show that the plague made everyone's equal. This was called the Danse Macabre.
- Others became Flagellants and walked from town to town whipping themselves hoping to please God.
Impacts of the Black Death on the peasants
As the peasants lived close together in little villages and had nowhere to go unlike the nobles were affected the most by the Black Plague. Many died as the plague was so contagious.
Impacts of the Black Death on the nobles
Not a huge population of the nobles died or were affected as they could flee from the plague and into their country estates.
Why is more known about Europe than Asia
More information has been found about the Black Death in Europe because
- Little research has been found with access to only European speaking people
- There aren't many detailed records about the topic in Asia
- Wars and famine could have been happening at the same time, destroying the sources
How is the Black Death related to the end of the feudal system?
The Black Death killed so many peasants it caused lords to have less control over the peasantry and taxes. This caused peasants to seek new work in other towns and improve their way of life. The peasants had then created a new group in the social hierarchy - the middle class.
How is the Black Death related to the loss of church power?
The people became angry with the churches because their teachings had not protected them from the plague. The priests also ran away when people tried to claim last rights, meaning that they wouldn't be able to go to heaven. Peasants lost trust in the church and the church became unpopular.
The church also had to recruit young people without experience because so many died.
