HSES : Term 2 : Biomechanics
Terms in this set (27)
What is biomechanics?
The study of forces on the body internally and externally, and the effect of the forces on and within the body.
How does understanding biomechanics help sportsmen?
- Correct Technical Errors
- Reduce / Prevent Injury
- Improve Equipment Design
What are the benefits of understanding biomechanics?
Forces on the body can be analysed and interpreted using biomechanics.
Force that pushes an object down.
Force against an object.
Force moving perpendicular to the direction of flow.
Force pushing forward on an object.
How do forces affect the motion of an object?
A force can cause a resting object to move, or it can accelerate a moving object by changing the object's speed or direction.
How is maximum force produced?
- Maximum body parts are used.
- Precise Timing of movements is applied.
- The order of body parts moving are correct.
The ability to maintain equilibrium.
Forces are equal.
Balance while being still.
Balance while moving
Centre of Gravity
The point at which the entire weight of an object can be considered to act
Base of Support
the area on which an object rests
Line of Gravity
an imaginary vertical line drawn through an object's center of gravity
How does the centre of gravity affect your balance?
The lower the centre of gravity, the more stable the object.
How does the base of support affect your balance?
The larger the base of support, the better your balance.
How does the line of gravity affect your balance?
A shorter line of gravity (from centre of gravity to ground) increases your stability.
The state in which one object's distance from another is changing
the motion of a body about a fixed point or fixed axis
Movement in a straight line.
combination of linear and angular motion
increasing force in a direction from rotation
Range of Motion
The range through which a joint can be moved
the curved path that an object follows when thrown, launched, or otherwise projected
the path followed by an object moving through space
