The Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Exam is an introductory-level FINRA exam for prospective professionals in the financial services industry. Whether you’re a college student, career-changer, or a non-licensed employee of a financial institution, the SIE exam is your gateway to other FINRA exams, such as the Series 7.

Jumpstart your career and distinguish yourself in the industry by using Quizlet’s tips for acing the SIE.

1. Break down the SIE📚

The SIE is a 75-question multiple choice test designed to be completed in 1 hour and 45 minutes. Knowing the SIE topic breakdown will help you prepare for each section of the exam. To best prepare, you may want to place greater emphasis on studying for sections with a higher percentage of exam questions.

The content breakdown of the SIE is as follows:

  • Knowledge of Capital Markets: 16%
  • Understanding Products and Their Risks: 44%
  • Understanding Trading, Customer Accounts and Prohibited Activities: 31%
  • Overview of Regulatory Framework: 9%

Understanding the test is a great first step to begin studying for the SIE. Be confident!

2. Familiarize yourself w/ finance💰

After determining what content the SIE will cover, it’s time to start learning! Definitions, formulas, and financial rules will be important for you to recall during the exam. Find a book you trust, and use it as an introduction to the material you’ll need to know. If you already have experience in finance, this will be a great review!

3. Practice time management⏰

Time management is important for two reasons.

First, the SIE is a challenging exam. Knopman Marks recommends test-takers spend 40-60 hours studying for the SIE. If you start 1-2 months in advance, you will have plenty of time . Starting early also gives you time to use spaced repetition, which often yields better results and deeper understanding than cramming. Quizlet’s Learn mode can help you make spaced repetition fun.

Second, the SIE is a timed test. In 1 hour and 45 minutes, you must answer 75 questions. We recommend timing yourself each time you take a practice test. Pay attention to which types of questions are taking you the longest to complete, and keep practicing!

4. Set SMART goals!🏆

Studying for big exams can be a challenge! To make passing your test feel more achievable, set SMART goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. For example, a goal for studying for the SIE exam might be to memorize the FINRA rules for capital markets within 1 week. Setting goals will help you track your progress and motivate yourself to study harder (and smarter!) Identifying where to start is a great first step. The positive pursuit of your goals and small wins will have a big impact on your study journey!

When you reach your goals, treat yourself! Taking time to relax and do things you enjoy will make this process much easier.

5. Study with practice questions on Quizlet!⭐

Quizlet has partnered with Knopman Marks to make following this last tip a breeze.

After talking to people who passed the SIE about their own best practices for studying for the exam, it was clear that practice questions had the greatest impact on their confidence and understanding of the material. After all, practice questions that mimic the SIE are as close as it gets to the real thing.

Knopman Marks’ SIE Prep Pack includes important concepts and practice questions divided by section type, so you can ensure you’re studying the material you need. With explanations for all correct answers, these practice tests will help you determine what you’ve mastered and what to review,

Ok, first of all this is really important to people who are studying for tests such as these, everybody has their own way of studying. It is true that some people do NOT study for tests and therefore, fail. I myself have found Quizlet to be very helpful I memorization tactics, and I plan to use these tips when I start to study for the SIE. I guess a few people don't like Quizlet, but they are entitled to their opinions. But I for one, have found Quizlet a very helpful place to learn and to study. (^^)

I think this article is really helpful to a lot of people. There. I said something complementary. Now will you delete this comment? You probably will anyway. Can I ask an honest question about this blog without it being wiped?Well I'm going to try even though this is going to be deleted. Is this an opinion blog, or is this a quizlet fan club blog, because if any comment other than 'Quizlet is the best' is posted: *WHAMMO* it's outta here. If you really want honest feedback, take critical comment into consideration. And I don't mean allowing chat, I totally agree on that. Just try to learn from us users so that you can improve your website. I hope you will consider this before you send it to the dumpster. Thanks!

Just a question for the Quizlet developers: Is there any chance you could add a chatbox of some sort in classes. My class has some trouble communicating on which person will make which set for which test. Just a recommendation. Quizlet is really awesome and I hope this can be added.

  27. BoiManSirMasculinity

It's much better to use other study sites or study materials in real life. Quizlet is too insecure and easy to use inappropriately. Many sets people make are just to chat with friends in classes, and large classes are becoming more and more spam invite members and sets people never study than actually educational. I honestly can't believe how after all these years, Quizlet just becomes worse and worse or never fix mistakes in their system even when everyone is reporting those issues. The Quizlet staff are not well trained and often times ban users and classes who did nothing wrong just because trollers spam report. I find it hard to believe that Quizlet employees get paid for such sloppy work. Quizlet is cheap and created by people who obviously doesn't know anything about web design and customer service. A lot of members just like to use Quizlet to get popular by creating huge classes full of bot accounts or inactive members. Just quit this "study site" and get a life yo.

  28. joshuasmith65

    thats it

  29. Darth_Vader_XD

I totally agree. I have tried to have many classes that were totally focused on learning, but then one day the class just disappeared, and I get an email from the Quizlet staff saying that it was deleted because of chatting. But the crazy thing is that there was not a single bit of chatting going on! But oh well, I guess it doesn't matter to Quizlet that all your hard work is lost in the trash, and that they happened to delete it just 2 days before finals.

Those who are saying that Quizlet is not useful and it's hard to remember the terms on Quizlet ...guys Quizlet is not bad its the best study tool I have ever used ... I have cleared multiple examinations with that .may be the study sets you guys are using is not good that's why it's hard for you to remember the terms or maybe you are incapable of using Quizlet with right methods. Let's take an example of the content in the book is waste and useless and organised, so it doesn't mean that textbooks are wrong; it merely means that the author is terrible... I have done my pg and got some excellent grades with it so please stop criticising Quizlet and start working on yourself.

  37. DHR_X_DID

well actually I think you misunderstood us.
We are saying that quizlet should check more when they delete an account or class
