4 stages and REM
Stage 1
Transitional sleep. Few minutes long, EEG shows alpha waves, rolling eyes
Stage 2
Slightly deeper sleep,
EEG shows sleep spingle and K complex
Stage 3
Slow delta rhythms, no eye or body movements
Stage 4
Deepest sleep stage, large delta EEG
Rapid eye movement (REM)
fast beta rhythms, frequent eye movements. similar to wake state.
Lots of extrastriate activity, inactive frontal cortex, active limbic system
ACh fires right before. Ne and 5HT increases at the end.
Muscle paralysis by increased GABAergic.
Characteristics of non rem sleep
decrease in muscle tone, heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, metabolic rate and temperature
Characteristics of rem sleep
increased to wake state of blood pressure, heart rate, metabolism
Wakeful
-Beta waves, low synchrony
- NE and 5HT fire during wake state, ACh from brainstem, histamine from midbrain, NTs fire as single spikes instead of burst . Tonic firing of neurons
Non rem sleep
general decrease in the firing rates of NTs. Sleep spindles by the thalamic neuron rhythmicity. As it progresses the spindles disappear.
REM dreams
relatively long, primarily visual, emotional, not connected to everyday events
Non-rem dreams
shorter, less visual, less emotional, current life of the dreamer.
