The development of an organism or any part of it
Stage of embryonic development where three germ layers have been developed. Third week of pregnancy
Outer germ layer of gastrula which will become skin and the central/peripheral nervous system
Middle germ layer which will develop to become Bones, Muscles, Blood and Reporductive structures
Inner germ layer of gastrula. Will develop into the Endocrine system, Urinary system and tract linings.
Structures outside the embryo that support its development
First site of blood cell formation. Obliterated later.
Becomes the amniotic sac, amniotic fluid. The amniotic sac is filled with amniotic fluid as a way to provide heat/cold insulation as well as shock absorption.
Will become the umbilical cord. The umbilical arteries will take deoxygenated blood from the baby's heart to the placenta, where it will dispose of the waste. Nutrients will enter the umbilical vein, which will take nutrient and oxygen to the baby;s heart.
Will become the placenta. The placenta is the site of nutrient/waste and gas exchange between the mother and fetus.
Nutrients, oxygen from mom's blood to fetus's heart.
CO2, waste to mom's blood from baby's heart.
Site of nutrient/waste and gas exchange via diffusion. High surface area increases efficiency. Prevents large cells from filtering to fetus blood.
Mothers Blood Vessels
