-Attempt in the past 24 months
-Act does not meet criteria for non suicidal self injury (Ex. Cutting)
-Diagnosis is not given out if there is ideation or preparatory acts (fantasizing about suicide or plan to commit suicide) actually needs to be an attempt.
-Act is not undertaken solely for a political or religion objective

4 Kinds of people who intentionally end their lives (Shneidman)

1. Death seekers: clearly intend to end their lives (uses a way that ends in death for sure, fantasizes about death)

2. Death initiators: intend to end their lives because they believe that the process of death is already underway (elderly, sick people)

3. Death ignorers: do not believe that their self-inflicted death will mean the end of their existence (believe there is existence after death- re-joining with a lost loved one)

4. Death darers: have ambivalent feelings about death and show this in the act itself
