what is cultural competence? what are examples of how we can make programming more culturally competent?
-having the competency to be aware, work with and understand different cultures
-in observing other cultures, we humans see the world through a lens of who we are rather than seeing the world as it is
what is meant by "blaming the victim"
-the individual is responsible for the disparities that exists, assumes the person is doing something wrong not the environment (haven't educated those people well enough) teach them the skill, policy can blame the victim or can help depends if its integrated right to change the environment no the person.
what is the "just world hypothesis"
-if i work hard i deserve more, if not believing this than loose faith and drive to work hard
-problem with this is that not everyone has an even playing field
what are the difference between the medical model and the public health model- focus, cause, intervention type and the biggest issue or problem?
-medical model: focus = what are we trying to do? individual health, curing disease/treating disease, Cause = why do people get sick? person choices, how people make poor choices and genetic predispositions, Types = medication, surgery, but do they exist for obesity? told about risk factors not that they have obesity, Biggest issue= not everyone has the same access to help
-Public health model: Focus: prevention, Cause = environment (larger factors than the individual), Types = vaccinations, provide public to access for flu shot, policy work, Biggest issue: free choice (freedom), polices for everyone less choice at individual level
what is meant by behavioural justice and what role can it play in increasing PA levels?

-is a perspective can maintain the principle of individual control and responsibility but one that is conditioned on adequate resources.
-examples:
what did rapport mean by the following concepts. paradox? convergent? and divergent reasoning?
Paradox: a statement or tenet contrary to received opinion or belief...discordent with what is held to be established truth (solution creates problem)
-Convergent reasoning: two things going into one point (have a problem to find one solution for multiple things)
-Divergent reasoning: multiple things split from one point (possible solutions from one problem)
**when we convert solutions we get more problems when we divert we see all possibilities
what is the difference between the rights perspective and the needs perspective?
-needs views people in difficulty, focus unsaying people - can lead to blaming the victim
-rights -> right to be different, value voice and freedom
what is the difference between prevention, intervention and empowerment?
-Prevention: Needs based, top-down (expert approach), view people as dependent, single focused
-Intervention: Rights based, view people as citizens, single focused
-Empowerment: balances needs with rights, focuses on understanding, bottom up -> collaborative, strength based, multiple solutions
what are the five defining features of culturally competent programs?
-Acknowledge culture as an important factor in shaping behaviors, values and institutions
-Acknowledge that cultural differences exist and have an impact on service delivery
-Believe that diversity within cultures is as important as between cultures
-Respect the unique, culturally defined needs of the priority population
-Understand that people from different cultures are best served by persons who are a part of or are in tune with their culture
how do we try to change the victim?
-Identify a/the social problem
-Study those affected by the problem
-Define the differences as the cause of the social problem
-Design a humanitarian program to teach a new skill
