What is electrochemistry?
What does it have to have?
changing from chemical PE to electric PE and back
half cell reducing
half cell oxidizing
What are the 4 applications of electrochemistry in real life?
breathalyzer
lead car batteries
hydrogen fuel cells in cars
oxidation of metals (corrosion)
What is the reaction for a lead car battery expierencing electrochem?
can this reaction go in both directions?
Pb + PbO4 (leadoxide) + HSO4 (sulfiric acid)+ 2H ------->
PbSO4 (leadsulfate) + 2H2O
Yes
How does a breathalyzer work?
What color will this change the breathalyzer when this ocurs
(causing a color change from yellow to gree-blue.)
-Ethyl oxidizes with potassium dichromate
forming acetic acid
What is a hydrogen fuel cell?
combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, heat, and water.
How does metal oxidize? aka?
corrosion
a metal and oxygen will force the metal to oxidize when H2O is present
What 3 ways can we prevent corrosion?
Define these 3 options
(galvanizing) Enviormental- apply paint/ another metal overtop so the O2 can contact that one instead
Cathodic- attach a stronger oxidizer metal so O2 will favour that metal more
Voltage- apply a low voltage to the metal(s) so the metal and O2 can be at equilibrium so no ions are made
What is an Anode?
What is a cathode?
where oxidation occurs
where reduction occurs
What direction do electrons flow in an electrochemical cell?
through what?
from anode(oxidation) to cathode (reduction)
a wire
Where do anions go to an electrochemical cell?
Where do cations go to an electrochemical cell?
anions (-) will go to the anode (oxidation)
cations (+) will go to the cathode (reduction)
