The variability of group means.
Why is it called the analysis of variance if it is really a test on means?
The analysis of variance uses the variance within groups to estimate what the variance between groups would be if the null hypothesis is true. If the two estimates are way out of line with each other, we conclude that the variance between group means is due to something besides error variance.
What is the general rule for degrees of freedom?
The degrees of freedom for an effect are one less than the number of squared deviations that went into calculating that effect.
Is the analysis of variance a one-tailed test or a two-tailed test?
It is a one-tailed test of a nondirectional H0.
What do we mean by "multiple comparison procedures?"
These are statistical tests that compare individual means or sets of means with each other.
Do we need a significant overall F before running multiple comparison tests?
No, except for Fisher's LSD test where a significant overall F is part of the logic of the test.
Why not just use plain old t tests instead of multiple comparison procedures?
If we don't control the familywise error rate it can get out of hand.
