Diagnosis - SPLEEN SYNDROMES
Terms in this set (33)
Which direction does Spleen Qi travel?
The Spleen dislikes being ...
The Spleen controls ... and keeps it inside the ...
Blood, blood vessels
The Spleen separates ...
Clear from turbid
What emotion affects the Spleen?
What are the 6 most common signs/symptoms of Spleen dysfunction?
Abdominal distention/bloating, loose stools, poor appetite, sallow complexion, weakness or heaviness of the limbs, changes in thinking.
Which 2 excess patterns can affect the Spleen?
Cold-Damp affecting the Spleen, retention of Damp-Heat in the Spleen
What 5 deficiencies can affect the Spleen?
Spleen Qi deficiency, Spleen Yang deficiency, Spleen not holding Blood, Sinking Spleen Qi, Dampness accumulation due to Spleen deficiency
What are the 4 general etiologies that can affect the Spleen?
1. External disease factors: Damp, Heat, Cold that either obstruct the descending function of LU Qi which impairs the ability of Spleen Qi to ascend, or direct invasion to the interior affecting the Spleen function.
2. Improper Diet: damp forming foods, over-eating the sweet flavour, eating too much, etc ...
3. Emotional factors: excessive worry, anxiety that damages the HT and SP, anger causing LR Qi to stagnate and attack a weak SP
4. Other: weak constitution, chronic disease, over-exertion causing deficiency
What are the etiologies for COLD-DAMP disturbing the Spleen?
External factors (getting wet on cold and rainy day, working or living in a cold and damp environment), Improper Diet (excessive intake of Cold and/or Damp forming foods), Emotional Factors (Worry, Anxiety)
Why might there be LOOSE STOOLS, SCANTY URINE, LASSITUDE, LEUCORRHEA with Cold-Damp invasion to the Spleen?
The Cold-Damp pathogen obstructs the Middle Jiao preventing transformation and ascension of Spleen Qi
Why might there be TASTLESSNESS with Cold-Damp invasion to the Spleen?
Dampness rises to the mouth, obstructing the Spleen's ability to taste
Why might there be YIN JAUNDICE (dim yellow skin and sclera) with Cold-Damp invasion to the Spleen?
Cold-Damp pathogens accumulating in the LR/GB obstructing the flow of bile which spills out to the skin and eyes
What would the tongue look with with a Cold-Damp invasion affecting the Spleen?
Pale body, sticky and greasy white coat
What would the pulse feel like with a Cold-Damp invasion affecting the Spleen?
Slow, soggy, slippery
What are the etiologies for DAMP-HEAT invading the Spleen?
External invasion, Improper Diet (excessive intake of hot/spicy/greasy food), Emotional Factors (Anger causing LR to attack SP), Further development of other syndromes (Cold-Damp in the Middle Jiao cause stagnation with can give rise to Heat)
Why might there be FOUL SMELLING AND STICKY STOOLS with Damp-Heat invading the Spleen?
Damp-Heat pathogens accumulate in the SP obstructing the SP Qi function of transforming and transporting
Why might there be HOT SENSATION UNRELIEVED BY SWEATING, THIRST WITH NO DEISRE TO DRINK with Damp-Heat invading the Spleen?
The Dampness traps the Heat inside of the body and is steamed to the tongue reducing the desire to drink
What will the tongue look like with a Damp-Heat invasion in the Spleen?
Red body with yellow, sticky coat
What will the pulse feel like with a Damp-Heat invasion in the Spleen?
Rapid and slippery
What are the etiologies of Spleen Yang deficiency?
It's a further development of Spleen Qi deficiency ... further exacerbated by excessive intake of cold/raw food, over-exertion and/or senility.
Why might there be ABDOMINAL DISTENTION RELIEVED BY WARMTH/PRESSURE, WATERY DIARRHEA WITH UNDIGESTED FOOD with Spleen Yang deficiency?
Spleen Yang Qi is deficient and cannot transform food
Why might there be EDEMA, PROFUSE DILUTE LEUCORRHEA with Spleen Yang deficiency?
Deficient Yang is unable to transform fluids
What would the tongue look like with Spleen Yang deficiency?
Pale and swollen body with a wet coat
What would the pulse feel like with Spleen Yang deficiency?
Deep, weak and slow
What are the etiologies for Spleen not holding Blood?
Further development of other syndromes (chronic illness consuming Qi, over-exertion)
Why might there be HEMORRHAGE (bloody stools, hematuria, excessive menses, uterine bleeding, easy bruising) with Spleen not holding Blood?
When Spleen is deficient, it cannot control its holding function, and fails to consolidate the Flush and Conception vessels (*uterine and menses, specifically)
What will the tongue look like with Spleen not holing Blood?
What will the pulse feel like with Spleen not holding Blood?
Weak and thin
What are the etiologies of Spleen Qi Sinking?
Further development of other syndromes (Qi/Yang deficiency) ... Chronic diarrhea, over-exertion, increased abdominal pressure sue to chronic constipation or heavy labour
Why might there be a DOWN-BEARING SENSATION (abdomen, pelvic floor, internal organs), PROLAPSE (internal organs, lips, eyelids) with Spleen Qi Sinking?
Deficient Spleen Qi is weak and it cannot ascend like it should
What will the tongue look like with Spleen Qi Sinking?
What will the pulse feel like with Spleen Qi Sinking?
Weak and thin
